Instead of looking at the bad time in the the dark place, sit down and say, okay, how did god get me through this? What did he do? How is things how are things different? It was very difficult for me to talk for years about my vision pyramid. I didn't want people to see me as a visually impaired person. But now that I've seen what God has done and where he's taken me, I'm much freer to share that part of my life because I have seen what he has done, and I'm I'm just I'm he has compelled me to share that. And so, you know, maybe that's what that's the difference that we need to see. What has God done? And when you are filled with the on the wonder, of what God did anyway. I think that will help to open your your mouth, open your spirit to proclaim and to share the story that God has given you. Hi. I'm Ruth Hovsepian. Welcome to the Out of The Darkness Podcast, where we help you navigate life's trials based on eight and biblical truths.

Karen Wingate is the author of the award winning book with fresh eyes. Karen was born visually impaired, but at the age of fifty five had eye surgery that improved her eyesight dramatically so she could see things she had never seen before. Her news site gives us insight into how being grateful for what we have led to a life of fulfillment and joy. Karen shares her message of hope, help, and healing through her writing with Proverbs thirty one ministries, her personal blog, and her speaking to church communities and school groups. Welcome, Karen. I am so happy to have you join me today on out of the darkness, and I cannot wait to talk about your story and your journey, I believe that many people will be touched by it and affected by it. Let's jump right in and have you tell us a bit about your journey and how you've gotten to where you are today. Thank you so much for having me.
0:02:22
To start my story, I was born totally blind or at least I could what doctors described as being able to see through an industrial strength shower curtain, probably light and dark, and just, you know, just basically a fog. It's important that that images get on the optic nerve as soon as possible. And now this happened this will show my age. This happened in the sixties when medical technology was was far more rustic than it is now. And so doctors didn't think that they could the presenting problem was that I had congenital cataracts. It represented a whole eye dysfunction. I I have a genetic ID effect that that carries in my family.
0:03:06
And so the doctors opted to try to do surgery when I was ten months old and there were there were a total of eight surgeries. They didn't think the cataract could just be removed. So they went through a series of procedures where they tried to just break up the cataract and let it they thought it would just dissolve on its its own. It didn't Those little fragments were left in the eyes. And so by the time I got to school, I was to the the point of of what they call legal blindness. You know, I could see some with with very strong bifocal glasses, but basically, my world was was I I define things by a bunch of blurry blobs. I don't think my family knew how bad my vision was, so they sent me to public school.
0:03:56
And for the first three years, I I coasted, but then by fourth grade, Life was getting harder. Print was getting smaller. They were getting farther away from the chalkboard, and it became very difficult. So at one I had my my final surgery of my childhood. And in my mind, it did no good. So I remember saying to my mom how how discouraged I was about, you know, that I can't see, and it's not doing any good. And And we don't we came from a very conservative background, and so it was a shock to hear my mother say this.
0:04:33
She said, well, Karen, God can do the impossible. He can do miracles. Mhmm. So I took that to heart and I prayed that God would heal my eyes. And for three months, that summer, I would shut my eyes tight first thing in the morning. Oh, god. Let this be the day that I can see. And nothing happened. My prayers got less and less. Finally, by the end of the summer, I prayed. Lord just help me cope. Help me cope with legal blindness. Help me get through life with this visual impairment. And God answered that in amazing ways. He I stayed in public school.
0:05:11
I went to university. I attended seminary. I married a pastor. I had children. I started an at home career. At each point, it seemed like God provided what I needed to do my job. It seemed like career that, you know, as soon as I hit a roadblock with being able to see my work, computer technology just advanced tremendously. And so I, you know, I did okay. I was content. This was the only world that I knew. I didn't know what it was like to see better because I'd never had it. And and god truly helped me cope.
0:05:49
But at age fifty five, I knew all along that I would that my vision was very fragile, that the whole eye structure was compromised, and I was starting to have some aging issues that that told me that that my site was probably not something that would last me my entire life. That it it I could be I could lose what I had. And the day came where I sensed that there was something wrong. Of course, my vision so bad. I know if there was a problem or not. So I finally said something to my doctor and we found out that I had a torn retina. And at first, they thought there was nothing that could be done. They were very concerned about doing surgery because of my eyes were so fragile. Finally, he decided to do a surgery and he even told me. Your vision may get better. It may stay the same. It may get worse. And I realized later that he was definitely speaking truth because in surgery, we could have lost it all.
0:06:49
Surgery was done under local anesthesia. And in the middle of the surgery, he because he got in there and he saw some things that could be done, he saw that those cataract fragments could could actually be removed because the technology was there to remove them through ultrasound. And so he He cleaned up the fragments. He repaired the retina. He widened my shrunken pupil to allow more light on the eye. And in the middle of his surgery, he said, missus Wingate, I usually don't like to make predictions, but I think I can guarantee that you will see better than you have ever seen before. Wow.
0:07:30
And so I lay there on that gurney thinking, what is better than ever look like? I had no clue of what that could possibly be. And yet over the last six years, the Lord has shown me so many things. I've made so many discoveries. Of what better eyesight can mean. Now, it's not twenty twenty, but it's certainly far more than I've ever had before. Wow. God, it works and you you teered me up here. Sorry. You know, the the power of God and, you know, we when we least stick speck that he touches our lives with it. And you may have waited for fifty five years, but oh my, what a what a miracle that is to get back whatever that percentage was did they ever tell you what that percentage was? Well, let's see. If if the numbers mean anything, my vision was in now that we're talking just one eye between twenty two hundred to twenty three hundred visual acuity. Today, it's twenty eighty to twenty to twenty one hundred. So two to three tons more efficient. Okay. It must it I I cannot imagine how you felt when you when that surgery was over.
0:08:59
Well, what was that that emotion that you had? Initial shock. Just I can't believe this. I didn't see it coming. I had no hope. I mean, I I was fully prepared to lose it all. And just oh, god. You can do this. You can do this kind of thing. And not to sound as super spiritual, but I spent the rest of the surgery just worshiping a god who could bring eyesight to a fifty five year old woman for the first time. It made the stories and the bible so real. I mean, we read stories about the crippled man was crippled all his life and then received healing. You know, it's possible. God can do this.
0:09:49
I I had been a Christian for most of my life. I've received the Lord as my saver at age eleven. And I I believed everything everybody told me, but suddenly the power of god just became so much more real as I got out and started discovering my world for the first time and saw the the detail of creation, the the just the expansiveness of the detail and variety that that exist in creation, I just became convinced that there is no way that that could have happened by Tampa States. There had to be a divine intelligence behind this creation. It's too big. It's too detailed. Too intricate, too expansive. Too changing from moment to moment. What a powerful testimony that is, and I love that comparison of the miracles in the bible. You know, he made the lane walk again and the blind to see. And it's we we expect those sudden miracles in this day and age, but god has such an amazing timing in the way he performs these miracles. And any I believe you that yours is a miracle. And, you know, many mace poohoo.
0:11:15
I didn't say all it was because, you know, medical procedures were not the same. Then as they are Yeah. Yeah. They they can say whatever they want. I truly believe that this, you know, that that God had taken hold of your surgeon's hands and and helped him through this process. That is a miracle. That's amazing.
0:11:40
Have you ever wondered especially when you were younger? And, you know, the maturity was not there why God would have allowed you to have only a limited amount of eyesight you know, it's it's hard to know why God does what he does, but I'm so glad that he did what he did. I'm I'm glad he did allow me. To have the vision that I get. I I give a talk sometimes about the benefits of of having poor vision, it has made me into the person that I am I'm glad that God didn't answer my prayer when I was nine years old. He had to get knee ready. To to receive the blessing and to share the blessing with others. But I am I am a stronger person. I am a more creative person because my limited vision taught me that there's no one way to do things. There's always another way.
0:12:50
My mother not knowing how bad my vision was tried to encourage me to do all the things normal children didn't. So she she was a big proponent of of, you know, making your own clothes. So she enrolled me in four h so that I could learn to sew. Looking back, I think, why did she ever do that? So my first sewing project, I start to thread my needle, and she says, That's not the way you thread a needle. I was holding the thread between my thumb and my forefinger and bringing the needle down to the thread, and I could feel -- Mhmm. -- when the thread touched the eye of the needle. And no, you're not supposed to do that. You're supposed to bring the thread to the eye of the needle and visually put it in. And, you know, I I was not in the habit of back talking my to my mother, and I said, well, that's the way I do it. But but see, that was teaching me that there is more than one way to do something. We can get that needle thread. It just may not be in the normal way. And and that's a lesson that I have carried throughout my life, and I'm so grateful for it.
0:13:52
I my vision impairment also taught me to rely on god. We weren't so apt to talk about spiritual matters or the the place of god in our lives. And so I don't know what gave me the idea, but even in my teenage years when I would get into scraps of of, you know, I'd get in over my head. I was very independent. But there were sometimes I'd get into an unfamiliar situations and, oh, how do I get out of this? And and suddenly I had the idea, you know, desperation makes us do all kinds of things. And so I I got the idea of, oh, you know, why not ask God for help? And and he did. He answered. He he delivered in so many small ways and big ways. And so my visual impairment taught me that he was reliable, dependable, that he cared intimately and personally about me. It's like Johnny Ericsson Tata, the the famous speaker who is a quadriplegic said she said, I would rather be in this wheelchair.
0:14:52
I know Jesus Christ is my lord. Then to be fully able and do not know Jesus. And I think that's where I stand too. Howard Bauchner: It's interesting my grandmother at the age of seven lost her leg, one of her legs to gangrene. Mhmm. So it was cut from below the knee and just as you did, she went on to get married, have children, and have what I call her own ministry. I mean, she didn't have the ministries that we think of today. Her ministry was being a a prayer warrior and speaking to everyone around her in her broken English about salvation. And what Christ could do in their lives. And I look at her and she would say the same thing I'd rather be this way with one leg, then have both legs and not know Christ and not know his amazing grace. And it speaks so much of the healing power even internally in our souls of what Christ can do in our lives. My grandmother never grew a leg back because she definitely learned how to deal with it. Right? And how to use that to her advantage So from what you've said, would you then say that because of your limited eye side, your faith was maybe challenged and you built a relationship with Christ that is a strong one?
0:16:40
Oh, definitely. And, you know, as I said, God has proved himself faithful. I I one time went to a a a seminar that was led by the editor of the magazine printed out by the navigators called Pre magazine. And he said he said that it It's interesting that god tends to answer immediately in big ways the prayers of three different people. Children, new believers and seasoned prayer warriors. And I find that interesting because you know, I I see the children and the and the new believers because God is is doing these wonderful things as a way of of helping to build the faith, to let them see that this comes from me. And as we grow more mature, we may think why isn't gone answering my prayers as much as as he used to? Well, it's because we've got the enduring faith to know that we already are convinced -- Mhmm. -- that he will deliver, that he will be with us, that he will get us through the hard times. And perhaps that third group of people, the seasoned parlor is because they've built that intimate relationship with God that they they have a more sense of what God's agenda is and they know how to pray. But, you know, I really believe that because I was needy and desperate and thought through to to ask god for his help, God answered in so many little ways that just built up my faith to help me just to see him as a as a good, powerful, and loving god. I know you've written a book with fresh eyes. What inspired you to write that book? Right.
0:18:32
After my well, it took about a month or six weeks before I know to start noticing the changes. And I was starting to get more active on Facebook at the time. So the first time that I had a discovery of something that I could see, I was so excited. Oh, I was so excited. So I yelled at my husband what I could see for the first time and I ran to my computer and blabbed it to Facebook, which is, you know, the big joke among all my friends. And it just everyday I was seeing something new, and I just I I started prefacing my my discoveries with, guess what I saw today? Ruth, I literally had people stopping me in the restaurant or in the grocery store saying, oh, please don't stop. We love seeing your post on Facebook of guess what I saw today. They said, it is making us see life ourselves in some fresh ways. We've got normal vision, but it's making us stop and look at the beauty of a sunrise or the intricacy of a flower or looking up at the stars at night. And so I started journaling and keeping a list of all the new things that I was seeing. And that became the basis for those sixty chapters in my book.
0:19:52
And the what I did was I would share the experience how I saw this for the first time, and then I would make a spiritual application or, you know, make some kind of biblical connection. In my chapter about the stars. I told about seeing the stars for the first time. And then I talked about how I as as before, I would read the story of Abraham and the Bible, and God said that your descendants would be as numerous as stars in the sky. Well, remember, I I see. And so I would look up the sky and maybe see Venus or the big dipper on a good night. And I think stars in the sky. God, you gotta do better than this. Surely more than five stars. And then after my my surgery and I went out to a friend house and I saw the milky way for the first time and the sky was just flicked with stars, then the truth of what god had said Abraham sunk in. And so I make that connection in my book. You were talking about the miracle that it wasn't just a one time miracle. There were so many things that were stacking up time wise.
0:21:05
Another chapter told about, I love museums. And when I was a teenager, I had a chance to go to Fields Museum in Chicago, and I had heard that the the King tut exhibit was there. Well, I missed it. And so all my life, I I have wanted to see that exhibit four months after my surgery, some friends of mine said, hey, you wanna go go on a museum trip with us? And sure. What's what's the special exhibit? King tut of all the possible exhibits to be my first time. Was this exhibit that I have wanted to see in my entire life. I don't see that as coincidence.
0:21:56
And I make the spiritual connection of god knows what's in our heart. He knows our desires and our longings. He he's he's in there. He knows everything about us. Something one thirty nine says that he knows everything. And and that was just another little proof that yes. God God's listening. God's listening to my thoughts and my wants and my desires. And as good loving father who delights in the joy of his children, he was willing to provide this.
0:22:28
So each chapter has that little takeaway and then it that ends with something for the readers to do to go out and and appreciate what God has done or or to see their corner of the world with fresh eyes. That is so amazing. You know, it was it was as a child is born and sees everything for the first time, you had that experience. You know, at the age of fifty five. What what a powerful thing that is, you know, you live your life with very narrow view of things in that fifty five, like a Pandora's box. Oh, and so I was so obnoxious. I'm sure. Yeah. But, you know, I am sure that your family and those that knew you appreciated your enthusiasm. Yeah. And that that child like Marvel had everything around you, how did that change your relationship with God. It must have changed your relationship with him as well. Oh, incredibly.
0:23:34
As I mentioned before that, you know, creation convinced me of the utter power of God. I took verses in the bible, like, Ephesians three twenty twenty one, the power that is in in us to do far more than we think or imagine? Oh, yeah. I had lived that. Suddenly it became real, it became personal. I just from from that point on till now, I'm just so convinced that God really can't do anything. That he really does care for each of us as individuals and that he has a plan He knows what is happening throughout the span of our lives, and he is going to walk with us every step of the way -- Yeah. -- he is not going to abandon us or forsake us. You know, those those words were in the bible, and I would read them and yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Go on. Now they're real. Now they really mean something.
0:24:41
How does a biblical foundation help us? When bad things happen in our lives? You know, just like a foundation of a house, you need that foundation for the house to stand strong. I think that's so true of of our lives as well. When you know the verses, when you've been taught about the character of god, his goodness, his power, his love. Then when the bad things happen, you have something to fall back on. You have something to remember. And when you've been exposed to those verses and you've read them for yourself, then the holy spirit has something to work with that he can then bring versus to your mind. You know, I can't tell you the number of times that versus, like, Isaiah forty one ten. If you're not far in with you, be not dismayed for I'm your god. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
0:25:41
I memorized that when I was twelve years old, but that verse has come to my mind. At appropriate moments so many times through my life. To give me that that courage and that strength, to keep moving forward. Another pivotal verse for me is I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. And that certainly taught me throughout my my younger years. I can do this. I don't have to let my blindness stop me. And more importantly, I don't do it by myself. I cannot do this by myself. I need God's help in partnership in accomplishing this.
0:26:20
And so, yes, that biblical foundation is just incredibly important. It's better to make sure you've got that now before the Tolmount happens, before the bad times happen. Because that's what's gonna carry you through. Yeah. I I agree with you a hundred percent on that. When if we are ready now, I've been you know, not through the perfect straight journey in my life. But I could remember the the verses that I had learned as a child, I could remember the hymns that I had learned as a child. And use those in my darkest moments. And and it would give me that strength to keep going. Now I truly believe, you know, in my heart that as believers, we need to get to know the scriptures inside and out. Absolutely. So that so that as you said, that foundation will serve its purpose. You know, it'll be a solid foundation. And it's great. You know, we see it all over. Social media is great for this. We hear all kinds of messages. There are all kinds of commentaries out there, all kinds of books that we can read and should read. But we sometimes forget to go back to the basis of everything and that is the word of God -- Yes. -- and keeping that close to to our to our heart.
0:28:02
How how did this change you as a person? This this this, let's say, the second half of your life. How how did this miracle in your life change you to live your life now. Two things come to mind, number one, that is has given me a greater appreciation for what I have. This reminded me to celebrate every day God's good gifts It has made me a lot more thankful instead of whiny. And Even though I have received this gift of Better Vision, my eyes are still fragile. I still may lose, but I have. And so each each day. I am so aware of the changes, of the newness. It's been six years, and that's still there. So I I believe there has just been a a permanent change in my attitude of of looking at life from God's point of view, from a positive point of view, a grateful view. And I'm I'm in the midst of writing my second book.
0:29:20
On that very theme of of staying grateful in the in the tough times that we can be grateful because god has given us so much think the other way that has changed me is it's made me a lot more vocal. It's made me a lot more open to god opportunities. To share just, you know, just like this. I mean, I I don't think I would have dreamed of giving my testimony, sharing my faith. To literally hundreds of people and trusting God to bring those opportunities to me and I have just been amazed at the platforms that he's given me to proclaim his name and to share my story and to to encourage people. It's been amazing. And, you know, when you put your hand in in the Lord's and say, Okay. I'll go wherever you want me to go. He will take you on the most amazing journey that might be as scary as a roller coaster sometime. But it's exhilarating. You can trust him to not let you fall out of that cart in on the roller coaster. He will take you places that you truly never drink possible and use you in ways that you could not begin to imagine. And that's certainly what has happened in the last six years. And just from some things that are are peeking over my horizon, he is not done yet. Amen.
0:30:54
And I think we all need that word of encouragement because when you go through life altering situations, and it doesn't matter what it is. I believe that we need to proclaim that to people around us and share our testimony and I'm in the same situation, and I find myself on this wild roller coaster ride, as you said. And it's only because I finally had the wherewithal and the the the strength to say, okay, Lord, I can't do this on my own. You take what, you know, you fixed. And let me use it for your glory because, you know, some of us have, you know, we've come through some very dark places and we're ashamed of it. And we're afraid to bring it out.
0:31:53
And yet, I have found the power in testifying what god has done in my life and how I've changed. And as you said, we need to be out there we need to even if the audience is one, to share with that person because we don't know, right, what they will how they will be affected and how it will affect their their life. It is it is something we need to take very seriously. If we are to say that we are a disciple of Christ, we then need to go and proclaim a message. And if you have trouble doing that, I suggest that instead of looking at the bad time in the the dark place, sit down and say, okay, how did god get me through this? What did he do? How is things how are things different?
0:32:52
It was very difficult for me to talk for years about my vision impairment. I didn't want people to see me as a visually impaired person. But now that I've seen what God has done and where he's taken me, I'm much freer to share that part of my life because I've seen what he has done and I'm I'm just I'm he has compelled me to share that. And so, you know, maybe that's what that's the difference that we need to see. What has God done? And when you are filled with the on the wonder of what God did anyway? I think that will help to open your your mouth, open your spirit, to proclaim, and to share the story that God has given you. Yeah. That's that's a wonderful advice. That's wonderful advice that you you've given it's it's not just the fact that we're here, but what it took to get us here and that is just amazing. Yeah.
0:33:50
What I know you mentioned that you have another book coming out and I know that you are speaking and on podcasts like this. What are you most excited about now? Oh, just, you know, what what are you gonna do next, Scott? I I just I love the people relationships. You know, even this opportunity with you in our chat before you begin recording. Ah, how rich? How wonderful? And I I just love those those people moments. I think that's what excites me. So he's got going to bring in the life. Who is glad going to let me see next? Yeah. I I agree with you.
0:34:44
I I love having a podcast. And the reason is because I need amazing people like you and I learn something from everyone. There isn't one person I haven't spoken to that I did not take some nugget of wisdom away from. And I I'm grateful for this platform and I'm grateful for what God is doing in all of our lives. Right? These are connections and as as the the tribe grows, the strength grows as well, you know, prayer, the prayers that go up, just keep growing. And I love that. I love the opportunities we have What is one advice you can give us today for all of us?
0:35:44
I as I was praying and preparing for today, I thought a lot about your the title of this podcast, the name of this podcast out of darkness, and what it means to go out of darkness into god's glorious light as the scripture says. And I and I certainly have experienced what it's like to go from darkness to light. And the that is not just moving into light. It's it's not that cut and dry. It's that light represents so much that God, you know, when we have light, we can see where we're going. We can see the vastness, beauty of his creation. We can see truth. In reality for what it is just like my my seeing the stars for the first time. And I I definitely see the spiritual connection there.

And so I would just encourage all of us to to look how look for how God is leading us out of the darkness of this world and the way the world thinks and how how the life Jesus offers can be so much better, so much so more oh, brilliant. That's so more expansive. And and I just encourage all of us to have the courage to step forward and grasp it. You know, even if you've been a believer all your life, and you're getting tired of the status quo and the mundane. Step forward, trust god, to to to take you new places, to take you into new areas of of service, of ministry, even to have the courage to step into a new dark place where God will show how faithful he is in bringing you all the way through it. You can trust him. He is faithful. He's good. He he has your best interest in mind, and he has so many treasures that he wants to share with you.
